9Nyiragongo Lava Lake, Democratic Republic of Congo

This is probably the last destination of the planet that a person would want to visit at the base of a lofty, steep volcano. It features the planet’s largest liquid lava lake. Despite persistent threat of death, the region is sprinkled with buzzing villages. Nestled in the interiors of Virunga National Park, Mount Nyiragongo is still active after multiple deadly eruptions. Visit one of the little known villages in the region, and get to know about the locals in Congo up, close and personal.
