Some hikers call this the best day hike in the country. Others say it’s the best day hike on the planet. The unique volcanic terrain here at Tongariro on New Zealand’s North Island is a sharp contrast to the green scenery prevalent here.
Here you can hike through a lunar-like landscape in the very shadow of famous Mt. Doom. See the semi-dormant smoking volcanoes in the distance. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is beautiful and ever-changing.
