5The Andaman Islands
The Andaman Islands are located about 620 miles from the beautiful Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean. These islands and the nearby Nicobar Islands make up a rather isolated group of almost 575 individual islands. At present, only 38 are inhabited.
The neighboring Nicobar Islands are off-limits to all tourists and many areas in the Andaman Islands are presently protected to protect the indigenous tribes there and to preserve their rare biodiversity. There is one five-star hotel, the Taj Exotica, but it has only been open for a couple of years. Thus, the abundant coral reefs and white sand beaches remain largely unspoiled when compared to those of some of the other places in the Indian ocean.
