Cities define the character of a destination in terms of art, culture, attractions, architecture and more. They don’t just offer memorable breaks but also give a first-hand glimpse of the local life, markets, food and other striking elements that have shaped the identity of the destination. Several travelers prefer getting a feel of a country by visiting its major cities. Here are some of the best cities to go in a European city break.

Milan, Italy

Milan is the undoubted fashion capital not just of Italy but probably the entire European continent with its designer storefronts and stylish boutiques. You’ll be spoilt for choice in the swish shops and malls of Milan. It doesn’t start and end with shopping though. There are breathtaking skyscrapers (vertical forests), ancient buildings and indoor courtyards. You can never have enough of Milan. Go with a fat wallet because you’ll be tempted to buy everything from the stores that dot the Quadrilatero D’Oro district along with the several fashion outlets and high street stores. Milan’s streets are no less than a runaway with the season’s trendiest fashion liberally flaunted.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is cute and tiny enough to navigate on foot as well as its favorite mode of transport – a bicycle. The city has one of the most buzzing atmospheres anywhere in Europe. Plus the city is known for its liberal and all-embracing character. From the famously infamous red light district (housing a plethora of sex shops) to its picturesque bridges to quaint canals to an unmistakable village community style charm, Amsterdam has it all! Hire a bike for a few days and go museum (check out Rijksmuseum or Anne Fran Museum) hopping or explore the surround tulip fields (extremely photogenic). Plus, who can resist the vibrant nightlife?
