11. The Buddhist Udumbara
The word udumbara is Sanskrit, for “an auspicious flower from heaven.” According to an ancient Buddhist legend, this flower only blossoms every 3000 years. It is said it last bloomed prior to the birth of Buddha.
Also believed to have been “sent from heaven,” this flower was discovered in 2010 by a Chinese nun and has been spotted more frequently in the past few years. Despite their tiny size, they have a surprisingly good scent. It is perhaps one of the best examples of just how beautiful and interesting the world in which we live can truly be if we take time to stop and smell the roses.
