5Pune, India
Pune is the birthplace of Iyengar Yoga. B.K.S Iyengar, as a young yogi of 18 years, was awarded the herculean task of bringing the yogic discipline to Pune. He introduced the idea of using props such as ropes to help students with movement limitations, thus making the practice more therapeutic and accessible. The Ramanani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute was established in the late 18th century. Combine this with a weekend trip to the UNESCO designated of Ajanta Caves, featuring rock carved Buddhist sculptures and monuments. The caves’ prayer monasteries are replete with 5th century AD art.
