While yoga and meditation are believed to have been around since the past 5,000 years and Mysore is known to be the originating place of Ashtanga Yoga. The yogic practice was not very popular with Indians prior to Independence. The Maharaja of Mysore appointed Krishnamacharya (Father of modern yoga) to spread yoga as a health promoting discipline. He began studying old texts at the local library and came across the Ashtanga, which was quickly adopted into a style with its challenging gymnastic style poses.
