Monterrico Beach, Guatemala

Monterrico is a quaint village along Guatemala’s Pacific coast.  It’s actually a portion of the popular Biotopo Monterrico-Hawaii, a noteworthy nature reserve that spans a 13-mile stretch of mangroves and beach.  Efforts to save the sea turtles have made this once unknown place especially popular with eco-tourists.  Stroll along the shore then dine at the beachfront eateries.  If you’re spending a night or two there check into one of the bungalows at the well-known Johnny’s Place Hotel.

Playa Pavones, Costa Rica

Situated in the Puntarenas region, Playa Pavones includes the biggest prehistoric rainforest anywhere on the Central American coast.  This once off-the-radar town is now one of the best places for surfing in Central America,  The waves here are reportedly some of the longest on the planet.  Whether you come to ride the waves or watch them crash on the shore in the sunset, stay at the popular La Ponderosa Beach and Jungle Resort.  It’s got the easiest access to the beach.
