Karekare Beach, New Zealand
Hike through the wilds of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park to the remote Karekare Beach. This black sand beach is situated on the country’s northwest coast roughly 20 miles southwest of the city of Auckland. Perhaps the most dangerous beach in the nation, it is well-known for its strong riptides and powerful surf. You might just recognize the steep cliffs towering out of the beach as the dramatic and striking film locale from the Oscar-winning 1993 feature film “The Piano.”
Black Sand Beach, Alaska
When you visit Black Sand Beach, be sure to take time to see some of the state’s wildlife and scenery. Visit Barry Arm and Surprise Glacier in Harriman Fjord. See huge pieces of ice from the blue glaciers drop into the sea. Feeling adventurous? Take a cruise, the kayak tour, or see it all from a bush plane. Camp overnight on the beach and explore the glaciers on foot.
