13The Colorful Canal Side Houses
The vibrantly colored homes on the banks of Amsterdam’s canals look straight out of a story book. They are bright, narrow and slightly crooked, owing to the fact that the underground soil is swampy. This means the homes are built on lengthy poles that are dug into the land to prevent these houses from sinking. Yes, it is quirky, unique and pleasant. A typical characteristic of Amsterdam, much like the cycling paths and tulip fields! Definitely Instagram worthy stuff.
Another whimsical yet beautiful feature that can capture any tourist’s imagination are the floating homes lining its famous canals. Plenty of locals here live in these floating homes, which are built like regular houses albeit in the canals. Visitors can also book a canal floating home and experience living up, close and personal on the city’s canals. There are around 2,500 floating houses throughout the city.
