Some travel bloggers say that such popular Greek travel destinations as Santorini, Crete, and Athens are at their best in the month of May. Indeed, it’s actually the shoulder season, so airfare and hotel rates are cheaper than during the summer tourist season. Of course, the biggest reason for visiting in the month of May is that the crowds are significantly smaller, and thus lines to get into the different tourist attractions are actually shorter. The shorter lines could actually save you several hours and give you more time to do something else.
Yes, you risk a little inclement weather but the gamble is worth it. Fewer visitors also means it’s easier to navigate the old sections of the various cities and the marketplaces too. Indeed, the latter can be crowded with locals even during the less busy low season. Finally, fewer tourists translates to shopaholics having more of an advantage when it comes time to bargain for souvenirs at the local markets.
