12Delve into the Green Grotto Caves

You will discover the Green Grotto Caves hidden ‘neath thick jungle undergrowth on the north shore. This group of underground tunnels and caverns has two levels and has a rich and interesting history. They were originally a secret refuge for the indigenous tribes and then a hideout for slaves who ran away from the inland hills’ plantations. Next, smugglers used them as ammo dumps during the Spanish invasions in the 17th century. Now they are simply a place where travelers can see huge stalactites, stalagmites, subterranean lakes, and intriguing geological wonders.
