8The Blue Lagoon, Iceland
Not to be confused with the fictional lagoon of motion picture fame, this manmade Blue Lagoon located not far from the fishing town of Grindavik in a lava field in front of the volcanic mountain named Mount Þorbjörn on Iceland’s well-known Reykjanes Peninsula is very real. More specifically, it is less than 20 kilometers from the busy Keflavik International Airport. It is a geothermal spa and one of the nation’s most visited attractions.
The Blue Lagoon is aptly named as the water here is a pleasing turquoise color. A local geothermal power station keeps the temperature of this water at a relatively constant temperature somewhere between 37 and 39 degrees Centigrade. This lagoon is also an exceptional spot to view the world-famous Northern Lights.
