9. The Grand Canyon, USA
The Grand Canyon, as regular readers know, is one of the world’s seven natural wonders. Located in the state of Arizona, it is up to 18 miles wide, one mile deep, and 227 miles long. Hiking this canyon rim to rim–as your roving writer once did with his father–is a significant accomplishment for anyone claiming to be athletic and adventurous. The very walls of this striking albeit formidable canyon present visitors with a virtual visual mosaic of erosion-born shapes and colors that are even more stunning at both sunrise and sunset.
10. Big Sur, USA
Big Sur is a rather rugged region of coastline in the state of California where the towering Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. Cruise the stretch of highway that twists and turns through the nearby stunning seaside cliffs. Veteran visitors suggest stopping to check out the sights at Pfeiffer Beach State Park.
