There are many things we take for granted when it comes to nature. We have long admired the beauty we have seen in such major motion pictures as “Lord of the Rings” and “Avatar” perhaps still not realizing that such beauty is truly all around us across the globe. Here are 20 of the most beautiful and mysterious forests in the world.
20. The Dragon’s Blood Forest, Yemen
Situated on Socotra, this is one of the world’s most unusual forests. Famous for its Dragon Blood trees, the trees in question have gnarled limbs, umbrella-shaped canopies, and red sap. In fact, the trees were named for their bright red sap. Globaltrees.org, says that the trees are becoming weaker as the island of Socotra becomes dryer because of a change in climate. The site predicts that they expect a 45 percent loss of the trees’ “potential habitat by 2080.”
19. The Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
This famous cloud forest spans almost 26,000 acres and contains a variety of wildlife and plants because it actually encompasses four separate ‘life zones.” It is the home of more than 500 species of bird, 120 different reptiles and amphibians and more than 100 different mammals. With 500 species of orchids, the area also includes the highest diversity of orchids anywhere on the planet. Forests such as these account for one percent of the earth’s woodlands. The Monteverde Travel Guide notes that they exist only “within tropical or subtropical mountainous environments, where the atmospheric conditions allow for” consistent cloud cover.
