No matter what’s going on in Indonesia, the island of Bali remains safe. The beaches are beautiful but don’t forget the stunning temples either. See Goa Gajah, the 9th-century temple carved into an ancient cave. Don’t miss the Uluwatu Temple constructed on the edge of a cliff. Some of the attractions have an entrance or parking fees but they’re very low. For example, at Uluwatu, admission is less than $1 even for adults.

Visit the well-known Himalayan city of McLeod Ganj where the Dalai Lama lives. “Budget” hotels there range from about $4.75 to $24 per night. Bargains aren’t as easy to find in the “touristy” areas. When you visit the famous Taj Mahal, the admission charge is based on where you’re from: admission is under a dollar for Indian citizens, but almost $16 for “foreign tourists.” There is an additional charge of $2.90 to see the Taj Mahal’s popular main mausoleum.
