Centralia was a bustling coal-mining town in the late 1800s. It once had a population of almost 2,700. As of 2020, five people still live there so it’s technically not a ghost town.
Since 1962, a fire has been burning in one of the abandoned coal mines beneath this town. It was evacuated when it started. It inspired the 2006 film Silent Hill.
