Mystic was founded in 1885. The main industries focus on shipping coal into the Black Hills and transporting gold and timber out of them. As WWII ended, business faltered.
Severely limited resources made running the sawmill difficult. The sawmill closed its doors in 1952 and other businesses also closed. The population dwindled and the town was abandoned.
