10Zavodovski Island
While the majority of the South Sandwich Islands are not as well-known as South Georgia, the ice-covered, uninhabited Zavodovski Island is actually the home of one of the planet’s biggest penguin colonies. More specifically, this volcanic isle located 350 kilometers southeast of popular South Georgia Island, is home to roughly one million pairs of mated chinstrap penguins. Look for them huddled against the island’s volcanic slopes. Unsurprisingly, many people know it as Penguin Island. There you have it, fellow frequent flyers, those are the most beautiful places in Antarctica.
