10Portland Japanese Garden, Oregon
A traditional Japanese garden is as close as SW Kingston Avenue. This 5.5-acre garden brings five different styles of traditional Japanese landscaping to America. Highlights here include the Flat Garden, the Natural Garden, the Sand/Stone Garden, and the Stroll Garden, and the Tea Garden. In summary, this scintillating site beautifully blends nature with harmony and tranquility in a manner representative of an entirely different culture.
I lived in Portland, OR for 46 years and I have been to the Japanese Garden many times. It is the largest & most authentic one outside of Japan. The other thing about Portland is it’s distinction as the Rose City, we have a huge Rose Festival in early June with Princesses chosen from each local high school, a tradition over 100 years old. The roses we celebrate are from the International Rose Test Gardens, adjacent to the Japanese Garden. It makes for a serene afternoon as it is all adjacent to one of our most beautiful parks–Washington Park. High in the west hills, the views of the city and beyond are breathtaking. On a clear day you can much of the Cascades Range, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Mt Jefferson & sometimes a peak at the 3 Sisters, stunning! And if the kids are bored, the Oregon Zoo is also next door, the elephants are famous as is their habitat.
