5Chicago Botanic Garden, Illinois
You can visit this lovely locale any time of the year and it includes some interesting, individualistic attractions. Be sure to see the memorable Model Railroad Garden is simply stunning. Here you will find miniature trains traveling over an exceptional, extensive collection of bridges, tunnels, and other assorted built-to-scale landmarks such as historic Comiskey Park and the White House.
Every section was made by hand of natural materials by distinguished designer Paul Brusse who is a specialist in designing garden railways. This display on Lake Cook Road in Glencoe is definitely a must-see.

I lived in Portland, OR for 46 years and I have been to the Japanese Garden many times. It is the largest & most authentic one outside of Japan. The other thing about Portland is it’s distinction as the Rose City, we have a huge Rose Festival in early June with Princesses chosen from each local high school, a tradition over 100 years old. The roses we celebrate are from the International Rose Test Gardens, adjacent to the Japanese Garden. It makes for a serene afternoon as it is all adjacent to one of our most beautiful parks–Washington Park. High in the west hills, the views of the city and beyond are breathtaking. On a clear day you can much of the Cascades Range, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Mt Jefferson & sometimes a peak at the 3 Sisters, stunning! And if the kids are bored, the Oregon Zoo is also next door, the elephants are famous as is their habitat.
