7National Tropical Botanical Garden, Hawaii
Nestled in Koloa, Kauai, the stunning National Tropical Botanical Garden specializes in both reserving and displaying local tropical plants in their natural settings. This gorgeous garden has five individualistic areas. They are Allerton Garden, Kahanu Garden, Kampong, the Limahuli Garden and Preserve, and McBryde Garden.
These gardens all have their own “living laboratory” staffed with actual scientists and research teams that study the flora and fauna of each one. This park on Lawai Road comes complete with beautiful views, old grove charms, tired plantings, and water features. Don’t worry about getting lost as all visitors are given a map of the property.

I lived in Portland, OR for 46 years and I have been to the Japanese Garden many times. It is the largest & most authentic one outside of Japan. The other thing about Portland is it’s distinction as the Rose City, we have a huge Rose Festival in early June with Princesses chosen from each local high school, a tradition over 100 years old. The roses we celebrate are from the International Rose Test Gardens, adjacent to the Japanese Garden. It makes for a serene afternoon as it is all adjacent to one of our most beautiful parks–Washington Park. High in the west hills, the views of the city and beyond are breathtaking. On a clear day you can much of the Cascades Range, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Mt Jefferson & sometimes a peak at the 3 Sisters, stunning! And if the kids are bored, the Oregon Zoo is also next door, the elephants are famous as is their habitat.
