Filthy McNasty’s Whiskey Café in Angel
Situated at 68 Amwell Street, this place is more than an Irish pub. While it does often host Irish folk artists, it also is famous for having hosted a number of the city’s “filthiest” rock stars too.
Pete Doherty was once a bartender here. The Libertines got their start here–complete with Mr. Razzcocks, their 70-year-old drummer. Rumor has it Shane McGowan once owned a piece of the place. Indeed, the walls are plastered with memorabilia from the Pogues, Primal Scream and the Buzzcocks. Plus, now they serve Thai food!
Nambucca in Archway
If you’re looking for the “next big thing” in music then you’ll have to brave the somewhat sordid surroundings of Nambucca on Holloway Road. Arrive before the crowd and you might find that while roomy the place is also a bit gloomy but that won’t matter once the band begins to play. This is the birthplace of many a hyped teenage band including Cajun Dance Party, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Pull In Emergency. Live acts perform every weekend and on occasional weeknights too. If you arrive early, play the Street Fighter 2 arcade machine.
