2Telluride, Colorado
This former silver mining town is located in a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains. It’s been a super ski resort since the 1970s but it still retains its Old West vibe. Telluride is a great place for biking and hiking in the summer but in the winter the ski slopes are surprisingly uncrowded.
It’s exclusive and significantly remote as well. This is due to the fact that it’s a good five-hour drive from Denver, the location of the closest major airport. Thus it also hosts fewer tourists than such other well-known ski resorts as Breckenridge, Eagle, or Vail. There are only 2,500 residents and the gondola to Mountain Village is free!
