12Montjuïc Castle
The Montjuïc Castle is a “must-see” for any history buff. This stone structure harkens back to some time in the 11th century. It began as an unimpressive watchtower where a single sailor stayed to keep an eye out for approaching enemy ships.
In the 1600s, during the infamous Revolt of Catalonia, the powers-that-be decided to build walls around the tower to stave off any potential invasion from Spanish King Philip IV’s fleet. Additionally, it served as a prison and even hosted Napoleon’s soldiers back in the 1800s.
