3. Taormina, Italy
This Sicilian seaside town appears precariously perched high up above the shining Ionian Sea. It’s backdropped by massive Mount Etna. Here you can stroll steep medieval streets to pretty piazzas to take in wonderful views of the volcano and sea. Stop by the awesome ancient Greek theater carved out of the local hillside, and the historic ruins of the interesting 15th-century Saracen castle too.
4. Monemvasia, Greece
You will find this fairy-tale-like town and medieval rock fortress off a causeway of the Peloponnese. Nicknamed “the Gibraltar of Greece,” the natural, rugged rock fortress here has been someone’s home since the 500s. Historically, this place has been under both Byzantine and Venetian rule. At present, there are an unusual number of different monasteries and churches to see.
