11Damascus, Syria

The earliest inhabitants to Damascus came here as early as 4,300 BC. While the Syrian city has often been believed to be the planet’s most ancient inhabited city civilization (dating back 10,000 BC), it isn’t a conclusively established fact. It also gained significance post the Aramaean arrival, when a series of canals and advanced water systems were built to regularize the city’s water supply. Damascus has been seized by the Romans and Ottomans. It boasted of multiple heritage tourist attractions until conflict struck.
