The earliest settlers to Balkh came here in 1,500 BC, and were referred to as Bactra by the Greeks. It was also termed as the “Mother of Cities.” Balkh’s prosperity reached its pinnacle from 2,500 BC and 1,900 BC, before it became a prominent hub of the Median and Persian rule. The region is today is one of the most important cotton industry centers in the country today.
