7Maunsell Sea Forts, England

You’ll be forgiven for mistaking these lofty metal props for a movie set at the Thames estuary, which was in effect built during World War II to protect English forces against German raids. The fort structures were abandoned mid way during the mid 50’s, while isolated towers became the unofficial headquarters of pirate radio broadcasters for many subsequent decades. Today, most of the forts can be viewed from a ship or the Shoebury East Beach on bright and sunny days.
